I had to go to town first thing, where I spent far too much. I then had a spell in my studio working on GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR - SIMPLIFIED VERSION: I finished adding the evolving figurative images in the strand representing the character and after this I started to add the simple (but still evolving) images to the background squares. I then went out for the evening; where I spent too much again!

Possibly a bit of a late start but I spent most of the day working on GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR - SIMPLIFIED VERSION. I started by redefining the lines with another coat of paint and then began to add ascending figurative fantasy variations to the thematic strand.

I am still not happy with GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR (first version), maybe I will put a coat of yellow oxide on the thematic strand of this work.

I completed the main painting stage of GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR - SIMPLIFIED VERSION - i.e. I covered the entire canvas with paint - and then decided to repaint substantial areas. After I had done this I pretty much decided to do it again! The only other wok done during the day was on the computers.

I started (but didn’t finish) the main painting stage of GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR - SIMPLIFIED VERSION using acrylic jar and tube colour. I painted in the girl’s thematic strand in yellow oxide, put a wash in the same colour over the entire work and then began to paint over this, initially using pinks and purples.

I repainted the lines on MEDUSA AND PEGASUS - BLOOD STAIN ON A POST BOX as planned.

After this I did the initial charcoal sketch for the new simplified GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR and then went over the charcoal lines with paint brush applied acrylic medium.

Yet more alterations to GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR! I obliterated and repainted an area which I had obliterated and repainted two or three times before. I am going to stop myself from returning to this work - it is now classified as finished (I think!).

I restretched and primed a canvas to start a simplified version of the above work - I have decided against doing two such works.

I also partially repainted the lines of THREE AND A HALF GRACES - PATCHES OF LICHEN ON A LETTER BOX and hope to do likewise to MEDUSA AND PEGASUS - BLOOD STAIN ON A POST BOX tomorrow.

I have started another one entitled AN ARTIST WHO HELPS ANIMALS (ARTIST FOR ANIMALS) about my fund raising and campaigning activities - primarily in the Nineties but I intend to begin again (time allowing).

I was home all of this Saturday. I added more symbols to the background of GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR (this work has an extremely active background as compared to the restrained or blank backgrounds of late) and then worked on the computers the rest of the day.

I worked on GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR again (I really don’t like this work - it has evolved too much from the original structure; which admittedly I sketched in too quickly). I finished filling in one set of images and then I decided to actually add another set to the right of the figure - to match the set on the left. I also did more detailing.

I plan to start two simplified versions of this work plus a couple of very small spin-offs.

I finished adding the small images in the folded thematic strand on GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR. The images evolved from a surreal variation on a girl sitting on a wicker chair (surprise surprise!), each image prompting the next. I also did a bit of detailing; mainly trying to improve what I did yesterday. I now have to add the background organic figure variations and some writing and should finish the work next week.

Nothing of the former was done although I did manage a little bit of the latter. I added all images (using thin acrylic which isn’t really suitable for the surface but I may paint over it with oil or even rub it off) to the small sculpture/painting, STUDY FOR A THREE DIMENSIONAL LANDSCAPE. There are eight painted sides but they separate into two double sided panels for painting.

After this I started adding the image stream to GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR but didn’t get so far as I would have liked.

My wife didn’t sleep all night so nor did I! Consequently I found work somewhat difficult today! I finished adding all the background symbols to GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR and went on to a little more work on the painting: squaring up the centre section and other detailing. Not much else was done.

I started adding background symbols to GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR but did not finish - there were quite a few to do and I also went out a number of times during the day. I am mainly working on large works over the next few weeks - twenty years ago this would have been quite normal but now I find it a little daunting.

I started the working day by sawing thin sheets of wood and then cutting slots to make a free standing picture with panels at right angles. This one is quite small and entitled STUDY FOR A THREE DIMENSIONAL LANDSCAPE.

I then painted in the images and consequently finished BONFIRE IN A WOOD, MOTHER AND CHILD and THE ARTIST’S WIFE.

I did likewise to CLIPBOARD PORTRAIT but I am not sure if I need to do more. However I called the work provisionally complete at the end of the day.

June is not very well which is a bit worrying.

I added fairly simple facial variations to CLIPBOARD PORTRAIT not realising initially that the paint was still wet. I may have to retouch parts of this work although it is provisionally finished.

I then started work again on GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR, adding more background structures plus some experimental detailing.

I finished adding the images to THE ARTIST’S WIFE although some will need filling in with colour.

I also added all the symbols to MOTHER AND CHILD - again some of the images will need filling in.

After this I had to go out, although I did take a sketch book (not to sketch but to make small drawings on the theme of “figure in a landscape”).

I added symbols to BROKEN TREE, finishing the work; I actually added one series, of images, didn’t like them so I partially removed them and then added a new set. the theme of the work is mortality but the starting point for the symbols is actually bark patterns.

I then added all the symbols to BONFIRE IN A WOOD. These may need further painting. I used fire (and its resonances) as the starting motif.

After this I added a further set of images to THE ARTIST’S WIFE. A further set needs to be added, hopefully tomorrow.

I completed the work CHEESBOARD PORTRAIT; roughing in the drawing, refining the lines in oil paint, painting everything and then scratching in the symbols.

After this I repainted the lines and then added additional linear elements to THE ARTIST’S WIFE and also painted in symbols (in a fairly spontaneous way) in the centre section. I also repainted the lines on MOTHER AND CHILD.

A sort of normal day (I was out all day yesterday) but I was a bit late getting in my studio and then finished early. However, the landscapes - which are quite distinct in terms of my creative approach almost seem a bit anachronistic now that I am returning to an experimental frame of mind.

I had a day out with my father, sister and June yesterday and had to write my cards this morning (Christmas!). After this I painted GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR, using acrylic stains and glazes. As mentioned before my current acrylic style is very rough and expressive. I finished work on the canvas too late to do much work on the computers in the evening.

I was not happy with the work I did on BIG AND SMALL LEAVES yesterday so I almost completely redid it; drawing and filling in with colour simultaneously. I have completed the first layer but as I am using acrylic I may do other layers on top before I add the imagery. I will see what it looks like tomorrow.

I also put some lines on LANDSCAPE: THE LEGACY OF THE FOUR BREASTED WOMAN. Using thinned acrylic paint (raw sienna) I followed the lines of the attached bras and then extended them across the canvas.

I filled in all the images on FIGURE IN FRONT OF A MIRROR with colour, finishing the work. This is the sixty eighth I have completed this year but I doubt if I will get any others finished until the new year. Although I did do some extremely preliminary work to a couple of small landscapes today.

Then, as a new approach, I washed in the rough shapes of the structures on GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR using very watery (raw umber and red oxide) acrylic paint. I did the same to BIG AND SMALL LEAVES, but even rougher and more provisionally with just a hint of raw sienna paint.

A bit of writing in the evening; but not a lot.

Saturday and my wife and step daughter went for the day. I worked in my studio for much of the time and finished adding all the images to FIGURE IN FRONT OF A MIRROR - hopefully I should finish this tomorrow (certainly by Tuesday). I may then do a couple of small landscapes before tackling the large canvases.

The latter part of the day was spent editing photographs.

I completed the first painting stage of STREET LAMPS AT THE WEYHILL ROUNDABOUT - ONCE A THOUGHT IS MADE IT HAS AN EXISTENCE INDEPENDENT OF ITS CREATOR - A LANDSCAPE SLOWLY SINKS INTO OBLIVION and then added another layer of paint in places.

I then repainted the small area of DISEMBODIED CONSCIOUSNESS which I did yesterday and also added more paint detailing to NUDE SELF PORTRAIT.

After this I started the preliminary work on two of the canvases primed earlier in the week. These will eventually become BIG AND SMALL LEAVES and GIRL ON A WICKER CHAIR.

I primed the three relatively large canvases I had stretched earlier; one was LANDSCAPE: THE LEGACY OF THE FOUR BREASTED WOMAN which already had two bras glued (not too well!) onto it.

I then added more paint to a small area of DISEMBODIED CONSCIOUSNESS - this is a bit rough and I hope to tidy this up tomorrow.

After this I added detailing to NUDE SELF PORTRAIT.

I spent most of the day painting NUDE SELF PORTRAIT. I am using acrylic paint on all four of these very large paintings which gives me the opportunity to use stains, washes and other consistencies of paint. These works are tending to be much looser and rougher than my oil pictures.

Not a particularly good day today. I started work by checking over PEBBLE HEAD and PORTRAIT WITH HEAD IN PLASTIC BAG which I had finished yesterday in fading light.

I then went over the charcoal lines on DISEMBODIED CONSCIOUSNESS with acrylic jar colour and started, very experimentally, adding the main colour blocks of the work. Progress was slow although it is an extremely large work.

I worked on a nature reserve yesterday (Saturday) and didn’t have time for anything creative - I did take some landscape photographs which may conceivably have some use at some point in the future.

As I was a little tired today I spent quite a lot of time in my studio. I painted in the symbols on both PEBBLE HEAD and PORTRAIT WITH HEAD IN PLASTIC BAG, finishing both works.

I then added all the (fairly rudimentary) images to MESH HEAD which, as they don’t need any further painting, completed the work.

I then completed adding all the images to PORTRAIT WITH HEAD IN PLASTIC BAG and also did some detailing.

I caught up with my writing first thing.

I then finished THE LANDSCAPE THAT LEARNT TO WALK UPRIGHT by painting in and detailing the bottom image section. I didn’t feel it necessary to paint in any of the other images.

After this I put a coat of primer on LANDSCAPE - THE LEGACY OF THE FOUR BREASTED WOMAN using up the remainder of my primer in the process.

I then started adding images to PORTRAIT WITH HEAD IN PLASTIC BAG but didn’t get a huge amount done before moving onto the computers again.

I took some more photos of works in storage during part of the morning (the rest of the morning was given over to social activities). In the afternoon I painted in the images on PERSON REFLECTED IN A MIRROR EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE NOT THERE; probably completing the work.

I spent a very large part of the day adding all the images to PERSON REFLECTED IN A MIRROR EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE NOT ACTUALLY THERE. I completed this stage however the end result is a bit confused. I rarely use any conventional compositional devices in these works so this can happen. I will see how it looks when the images are painted in. I may do another version though.

I started the day by restretching three canvases and then attempting to glue two bras onto the largest one using acrylic gel and jar extender - I didn’t have enough acrylic medium (or PVA glued which may have been better). I made a mess but I doubt if the bras are secure! The work when completed will be called LANDSCAPE - THE LEGACY OF THE FOUR BREASTED WOMAN.

After this I painted in the images on TWO FIGURES IN A BREEZE, even though the lines were still wet, and completed this work.

I finally did a bit of work on MESH HEAD and PEBBLE HEAD before the light faded. I worked a little on the computers during the evening.

I redefined some of the lines on MESH HEAD, PEBBLE HEAD, HEAD WEARING FOUR HATS and PORTRAIT WITH HEAD IN PLASTIC BAG and then temporarily left the works.

I then added all the images to the image strands on TWO FIGURES IN A BREEZE - plus a few other experimental additions to the background, some of which I later removed. This work is a bit of a trifle but reasonably OK.

I spent most of the day repainting the lines (plus some detailing) on TWO BODIES SHARING A HEAD, NUDE DOWN A RABBIT HOLE, FIGURE IN A TREE, THE HEAD CHAIR, HYBRID FIGURE and ONE AND A HALF FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE; completing all the works.

I also did the charcoal drawing stage of yet another large work (the last in this series) called DISEMBODIED CONSCIOUSNESS.

The rest of the family were out shopping so I worked rather sedately all day in my studio. I completed the main painting stage of TWO BODIES SHARING A HEAD and ONE AND A HALF FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE.

I then made a series of amendments to THE LANDSCAPE THAT LEARNT TO WALK UPRIGHT - principally adding new strands on the right side of the composition to hold imagery.

After this I did the charcoal drawing stage of another very large work entitled: STREET LAMPS AT THE WEYHILL ROUNDABOUT - ONCE A THOUGHT IS MADE IT HAS AN EXISTENCE INDEPENDENT OF ITS CREATOR - A LANDSCAPE SLOWLY SINKS INTO OBLIVION.

I made some minor amendments to the charcoal drawing of NUDE SELF PORTRAIT. These were mainly the equivalent of humorous asides and hopefully won’t detract from the monumental simplicity I am aiming for.

I then went back to painting the six small portraits (or genre paintings), making some progress before the light faded again. I can work after the day light has gone as I have a selection of lamps but I usually move on to drawing or writing.

I don’t reckon I have done as much work as I should have done today. I planned to start painting the six small portraits from early morning onwards but instead spent several hours making (probably unnecessary) amendments and additions to the drawing on all the works. I finally started painting in the afternoon but stopped early when the light faded prematurely.

A typical Sunday - so a typical weekend. I spent some time in the garden (but not enough!) and some time in my studio (not enough again!) - plus some time doing odd jobs around the house (probably far too much!!) and some time watching television (definitely too much!!!).
